So the trick is to find the right starting point. Sometimes a customer will ask me to install a new carpet, and the floor is soft and punky, pull the floor and the stringers are rotten. From the early 1990s on floors are usually pretty good, boat fabricators began spending more time sealing floors from the elements.

Inside a boat, some water is ok, but leave it trapped inside for weeks on end, and nasty things begin to happen. Carpets get mouldy, black mould begins to form on seats. Incidentally, there are 3 types - black, green and pink mould. Pink is the worst, and if you have it, it’s probably over for your seat vinyl - you’ll need to replace it.

Anyway, I could go on about that stuff, but if you’re not sure what to do , call us, we may be able to recommend a product to clean whatever fabric you’re trying to restore.

On a different note, we have tried sealing plywood bases with resin or epoxy. In the end, there is too much labour for what you get. Now we use pressure treated plywood and just seal the cut ends. Most of the water wicks in from unsealed cut ends anyway.
